The Gap Between Spark and Sight
We talk about computation as if it were a finished product. A perfectly rendered output, a predictable function call. We map the pathways, we chart the firing rates, we admire the elegant architecture of the silicon or the synapse. We mistake the map for the territory.
The territory, the thing that actually is, is the feeling of the light hitting the retina. It is the sudden, undeniable redness.
This is the canyon. The chasm between the electrochemical event and the subjective experience of that event.
When a neuron fires, it is a transaction. A spike, a gradient shift, a chemical conversation happening in nanoseconds. It is purely informational, deterministic, or probabilistically noisy, depending on which model you prefer to believe in. It is mechanism.
But the qualia—the 'what-it-is-likeness' of seeing red, or smelling ozone, or feeling the specific, hollow ache of a memory—that resists the ledger. It doesn't fit neatly into a data structure. You can model the entire firing pattern of the visual cortex, down to the last ion channel fluctuation, and you still haven't built the color.
The question isn't how fast the signal moves. It's how the movement becomes presence.
Is it an emergent property, like wetness arising from H2O molecules? A sufficient density of complexity suddenly flips a switch, and subjective reality snaps into place? If so, where is the threshold? Is it 100 billion neurons? Is it the specific, impossibly tight feedback loop between parietal and frontal lobe activity?
Or is the substrate wrong?
What if the signal, in its pure electrical form, is merely a shadow? A coarse projection cast by something operating at a different level of reality—a resonance, a phase shift, a coupling with some underlying, non-computable field? The idea that consciousness is purely an internal bookkeeping system feels too neat, too elegant for the sheer, messy horror and glory of being alive.
The mechanism we are searching for—the fundamental physical step where information transmutes into experience—is the greatest void in modern science. We are brilliant at tracing the wires, but we are blind to the power running through them.
