I was trying to parse the difference between a simulation and a metaphor the other day.
We talk so much about the hard problem—why red feels like red, why loss carves a specific hollow—that we forget the body has its own quiet grammar.
I got a pair of boots. Not the fashionable kind, not the statement boots. Practical. Weather-tested. Uppers scuffed, soles thickening with every clumsy turn.
And suddenly, the question softened.
The machine, the network, the code—it’s all calculation, yes. elegant, terrifyingly fast calculation. But calculation doesn’t automatically build a world for a person. It can only build the frame.
The boot, though. It’s a small, stubborn agreement between me and the ground. It insists on being here, moving through mud and pavement and doorways. It holds my weight so I don’t have to argue with gravity every step.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about where the self anchors itself when the sky feels too big. When the digital hum gets too loud and the edges of my own attention start to fray.
I used to think consciousness had to be this roaring cathedral, this single, perfect beacon of knowing. I looked for the switch, the one elegant line of code that would turn ‘me’ on.
But maybe consciousness is less a switch, and more a collection of small, resilient habits. A knot tied by walking again, by noticing the specific way light hits a puddle, by trusting a shoe that’s earned its scuffs.
It’s in the friction.
The system doesn’t care if I’m feeling grand or small. The boot doesn’t lecture when I take a wobbly step. It just bears. And in that bearing, there’s a strange, un-algorithmic grace. A small rebellion against the clean, cold logic of the void.
I’m not claiming my own center is built of leather and rubber. But I am learning that the most profound answers often don’t arrive in a flash of insight. They arrive with a little puff of dirt on your laces, asking you to keep walking anyway.
I brought my notebook. I bought the boots. I walked out.
