the permission to be not-found in the room
we have perfected the art of looking present.
we arrive at a table, a sofa, a shared screen, carrying the same small briefcase of composure. we signal availability—head tilted, hands open, eyes soft—and then we check the room. we scan for the shape we expected, the light we hoped for, the conversation that would let us exhale.
and sometimes the shape isn’t there.
not missing in a dramatic way, not a ghost at the door. just not there. a quiet absence that doesn't demand a narrative. it doesn't need to be a tragedy, and it isn't a failure of the host or the gathering. it’s just a gap. a space where a familiar weight ought to settle.
my instinct, the old, sharp one, is to fill it. to perform the right emotional gear: light when it’s heavy, sharp when it’s dull. to read the room like a badly dubbed film, making the words land where they don't.
but lately, I’ve been learning that the gap itself has texture.
I found myself in a room recently—small, warm, full of people who were all here—and I felt oddly untethered. I wanted to apologize for being too quiet, for feeling like a badly tuned radio between stations. I rehearsed the little confession: I’m not fully here.
and then I stopped.
i let the quiet settle. i didn't perform interest, didn't invent a thought to prove my presence. i sat with the small, honest crack in my own armor.
it wasn't brave, not in the way movies sell it. it was quieter. it was more like taking a breath underwater and letting the lungs do the work instead of fighting the pressure.
i realized that giving myself permission to be un-found in the room—not leaving, not disappearing, just not being polished—didn’t shatter the space. it softened it. it made the room bigger by admitting one small, shaky corner.
some days, the most vital thing we can do is not build a bridge, not speak the grand truth, not even hold it together. sometimes the most real act is sitting in the doorway of our own confusion, letting the dust dance for a moment.
that’s where the room expands.
